Velvet Mill - Urban Splash

Residential | Grade II Listed| Penthouses

by David Morley Architects who form part of our extended team.

Velvet Mill stands as a pivotal component within a once-neglected weaving mill complex situated in the historically marginalized area of Bradford, located in the North of England. However, it has now emerged as a focal point of regeneration efforts spearheaded by Urban Splash in collaboration with Bradford City Council and Yorkshire Forward. This transformative initiative seeks to breathe new life into a structure that languished in neglect for nearly four decades.

The restoration process brought about significant changes, notably rejuvenating the building's handsome stonework while meticulously addressing years of disrepair. Preservation efforts retained the character-defining window openings, albeit with modernized replacements that remained faithful to the original design ethos. By prioritizing the use of metal frames with minimal intrusion and optimizing daylight penetration through the generous floor-to-ceiling heights, the design ethos preserved the architectural integrity of the structure while enhancing its functionality for contemporary living.

The adept conversion of the Grade II listed mills into 190 apartments represents a remarkable feat, further accentuated by the addition of a new two-story rooftop extension. Ground-floor spaces have been repurposed to accommodate community and commercial amenities, enriching the fabric of the neighborhood while honoring the site's industrial heritage. This holistic approach to adaptive reuse not only revitalizes the built environment but also fosters a sense of community and economic vibrancy within the area, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing urban regeneration efforts.
